Is eating without food useful when you're not feeling well?


When you don't feel very fit, your appetite usually drops, especially if the cause of your discomfort is there stomach pain and tiredness.

Certainly when you're not feeling well, stay away from foods that are excessively spicy, overly seasoned or that weigh down the stomach such as sausages, fried foods or lasagne is a good idea, however there does not seem to be any real scientific evidence that to feel better it is necessary to eat exactly without food.

Commonly eating in white means preferring light-colored foods, which are recognized as lighter, even if in reality this does not always mean they are.

Overrated white foods

One of the foods that is most commonly associated with the concept of a blank diet and chosen as a meal by most people who are unwell is grilled chicken breast.

Grilling, in fact, causes small darker streaks to appear on the surface of the chicken breast, which are nothing other than the sign of a burn, which could be difficult to digest for a person who is not too fit. Furthermore, burnt meat contains the presence of potentially carcinogenic compounds such as heterocyclic amines and although their concentration on a chicken breast or a steak is minimal, they should always be avoided or limited as much as possible.

They are also part of the common blank diet boiled potatoes, pasta and rice. These foods are actually highly digestible therefore suitable for people who do not feel very well, especially if the stomach and other organs that contribute to the digestive process are affected by the discomfort. As always, however, it is good to pay attention to how to prepare and then season the dishes.

To avoid making the situation worse, for example, the pasta and rice must be well cooked and it would be better to avoid butter, but prefer a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

Even if you pay attention to all these details, however, it is not certain that the choice of the blank diet is a winning one. Although it is universally recognized that boiled white rice is the number one solution for stomach ache, gastric acidity and diarrhea, if you limit yourself to eating only that, the meal will be unbalanced in terms of nutrients. In fact, carbohydrates predominate and proteins are penalized, the absence or even deficiency of which can facilitate the raising of the glycemic index.

What to eat when you are unwell

Even if home remedies are able to improve many situations, it therefore seems necessary to take a further step regarding the validity of following a blank diet for a few days when you are unwell.

More than a blank diet it is correct to talk about a light diet and orient yourself towards digestible foodsregardless of their color or their bad reputation.

Mistakenly considered heavy are, for example, the eggbut if you cook soft-boiled or poached I'm not. It is better to avoid the omelette but only because it involves a cooking method that makes any food less digestible.

Among white foods, the most suitable remains rice, as long as it is not the only food in the meal and possibly wholemeal. It can also be alternated with other carbohydrates such as buckwheat or oats.

To buffer stomach acidity, baked potatoes are ideal, but for them the rule of not exaggerating and combining them with a protein source always applies.

As for drinks, yes to herbal teas, teas and decoctions but if you have stomach problems it is better to stay away from coffee and alcohol, which are irritating agents.
